German engineering company SMS Group has secured a major contract from the joint venture between Hyundai Steel and POSCO to supply rolling mill technology for a new greenfield steel plant in Louisiana.
The order includes:
- A hot strip mill
- A pickling line tandem cold mill
- An acid regeneration plant
- AMOVA automated logistics systems
The new facility is scheduled to begin operations in 2029 and will have a total production capacity of 2.8 million metric tons per year.
According to SMS Group, the integrated production line will be capable of producing nearly 2 million metric tons of high-quality cold rolled coil annually, targeting premium automotive steel applications.
The mill will be equipped with advanced automation technologies including X-Pact® process control systems and CVCR plus rolling technology, designed to support production of third-generation advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) used in the automotive sector.
The investment strengthens the strategic expansion of Korean steelmakers into the North American automotive supply chain.
