Vietnam’s steel imports increased by 11.6% in April 2025, reaching 1.37 million metric tons (mt), compared to March, according to the latest data from the General Department of Customs.

In parallel, scrap steel imports jumped 15.6% month-on-month, totaling 655,819 mt for the month.

However, despite the monthly uptick, overall figures for the year tell a different story. From January to April, Vietnam’s total steel imports fell by 4.7% year-on-year, landing at 5.12 million mt.

Meanwhile, scrap imports during the first four months surged 20.9% year-on-year, hitting 2.04 million mt, indicating robust demand for raw materials in the country’s steel production sector.

These trends reflect a shift in Vietnam’s steel market dynamics, with growing short-term demand for both finished steel and raw materials, despite a slower year-on-year recovery in finished steel imports.
