A U.S. national security panel, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. (CFIUS), is divided over Japan's Nippon Steel's $14 billion bid to acquire U.S. Steel. While a majority believe associated national security risks could be mitigated, the panel has submitted a report to President Donald Trump, who now has 15 days to decide on the deal.

Nippon Steel has pledged to invest at least $11 billion in U.S. Steel's aging plants by 2028, potentially rising to $14 billion with the addition of a new mill. The United Steelworkers union opposes the deal, citing Nippon Steel's history of alleged unfair trade practices.

The outcome of this acquisition now hinges on President Trump's decision, which is expected within 15 days of receiving the CFIUS report.
