Tata Steel has announced a significant investment of £1.25 billion to modernize its Port Talbot steelworks in South Wales. The project involves transitioning from traditional coal-fired blast furnaces to a state-of-the-art electric arc furnace (EAF) with an annual capacity of 3 million tonnes.

This overhaul is expected to reduce direct CO₂ emissions at the site by nearly 90%, aligning with the UK's broader decarbonization goals. The investment, which includes £500 million in support from the UK government, also encompasses the installation of a new pickling line and other infrastructure upgrades.

While the modernization will lead to job restructuring, with approximately 2,000 positions affected, it aims to secure the long-term viability of steel production in the region and preserve thousands of jobs in the broader supply chain.
