The Indian government has revised its steel procurement policy, introducing the ‘Melt and Pour’ rule to prioritize domestically produced steel in government projects. This mandates that steel must be entirely melted and poured within India to qualify for public procurement.

The policy aims to strengthen the domestic steel industry, reduce reliance on imports, and promote self-reliance in infrastructure development. It applies to all government ministries, departments, and agencies, covering a wide range of steel products.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the move, viewing it as a significant step towards enhancing the competitiveness of Indian steelmakers and supporting the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The policy is expected to have a positive impact on employment and economic growth.
