Global Crude Steel Output Inches Up 0.3% in April, Despite Regional Variations

Global crude steel production rose slightly by 0.3% year-on-year in April, reaching 155.7 million metric tons (mt), according to the latest data from the World Steel Association (worldsteel).

However, for the January–April 2025 period, output declined by 0.4% compared to the same timeframe last year, totaling 624.4 million mt.

Regional Performance Highlights for April

Asia

  • Total output: 115 million mt (+0.1% YoY)

  • China: 86 million mt, unchanged

  • India: 12.9 million mt, +5.6%

  • Japan: 6.6 million mt, -6.4%

  • South Korea: 5 million mt, -2.5%

European Union (EU-27)

  • Total output: 11.1 million mt, -2.6%

  • Germany: 3 million mt, -10.1%

Turkey

  • Output: 3 million mt, showing a strong increase of 7%

Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)

  • Total output: 6.9 million mt, -4.4%

  • Russia (estimated): 5.8 million mt, -5.1%

North America

  • Total output: 9 million mt, -0.2%

  • United States: 6.6 million mt, -0.3%

South America

  • Total output: 3.3 million mt, -2.4%

  • Brazil: 2.6 million mt, -3.1%

Africa

  • Output: 1.9 million mt, up by 6.9%, marking a notable regional rise

Middle East

  • Output: 5.2 million mt, +5.2%
