Eurometal, representing European steel distributors, has called for the rapid establishment of benchmarks for the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The association expressed concerns over the lack of clarity on average carbon pricing and the absence of defined benchmarks, which could impose unpredictable costs on the European manufacturing industry.
Eurometal President Alexander Julius emphasized the need for moderate and realistic benchmarks to provide greater predictability and reduce the risk of excessive burdens on the steel value chain during the early stages of CBAM implementation.
The proposal was presented during the 3rd meeting of the Informal Expert Group on CBAM, convened by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Taxation and Customs Union. The group plays an advisory role in developing and implementing CBAM.
