EU Considers Countermeasures Against US Tariffs, Eyes Restrictions on Scrap Exports

The European Commission has launched a public consultation on potential countermeasures targeting €95 billion worth of US imports, amid rising trade tensions over American tariffs on EU goods.

The consultation will assess a wide range of industrial and agricultural products that could be hit with retaliatory tariffs if negotiations between the EU and the US fail to yield a resolution. If no agreement is reached, the EU may also restrict certain exports to the US, specifically steel scrap and chemicals valued at €4.4 billion.

In parallel, the EU will initiate a formal dispute at the World Trade Organization (WTO) over US tariffs on cars, car parts, and reciprocal tariffs, which the Commission claims violate core WTO principles.

The Commission also warned of a possible diversion of global exports into the EU market due to the US measures and said it is actively seeking new export destinations and diversifying supply chains to mitigate potential disruptions.

The public consultation is open for feedback as EU leaders weigh their next steps in this escalating trade standoff.
