ArcelorMittal Expands Its Support for Less-Green Steel Standard

ArcelorMittal has expanded its backing for an industry initiative aimed at setting a more pragmatic benchmark for low-carbon steel certification. The company believes the current “green” definitions are too restrictive and fail to account for transitional technologies that still reduce emissions substantially, albeit not achieving net-zero outcomes immediately.

By advocating for a more inclusive standard, ArcelorMittal seeks to provide recognition for producers adopting partial decarbonization steps such as hybrid furnaces or recycled input materials. The company argues that these interim solutions are essential for a realistic and scalable shift toward cleaner steel production across the global market.

This move has sparked a debate in the industry between purist green advocates and pragmatic producers. It underscores the complexity of defining sustainability in an industry that is capital-intensive and structurally carbon-heavy. Finding common ground will be key to aligning certification with both market realities and climate goals.
