India's Ministry of Steel has received applications from 39 domestic steel producers aiming to obtain green steel certification under the country’s newly launched green steel taxonomy, according to Junior Steel Minister Bhupatiraju Srinivasa Varma, who addressed the Indian Parliament on August 4.

New Rating System Based on Emissions

Earlier this year, the ministry rolled out a classification framework that assigns star ratings to steelmakers based on their carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions per metric ton (mt) of steel produced:

  • 5-star: Emissions of 1.6 mt CO₂ or less

  • 4-star: Emissions between 1.6 mt and 2 mt CO₂

  • 3-star: Emissions between 2 mt and 2.2 mt CO₂

The National Institute for Secondary Steel Technology (NISST) will oversee the measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) process before issuing certifications and assigning star ratings. NISST operates under the authority of the Ministry of Steel.

Part of India’s Decarbonization Push

This move is a key step in India’s broader strategy to decarbonize its steel industry and align with global climate action goals. The certification is expected to promote sustainable manufacturing and encourage Indian steelmakers to invest in low-emission technologies.
