The UK government has officially extended countervailing duties (CVD) on imports of organic coated steel products from China for another five years, following a recommendation by the Trade Remedies Authority (TRA).
The duties, which range from 13.7% to 44.7%, had expired on May 4, 2024, but will now remain in place until May 4, 2029. The decision aims to protect UK steel producers from unfair subsidies provided by the Chinese government to its exporters.
The affected products are primarily pre-painted or coated flat-rolled steel sheets, and fall under the following customs tariff codes:
-
72 10 70 80 11
-
72 12 40 80 21
-
72 25 99 00 91

The TRA concluded that removing the duties could lead to renewed subsidised imports, causing material injury to the UK industry. The government’s acceptance of the recommendation signals a continued firm stance on trade defense measures amid global steel market tensions.
