April 22, 2025 — The American steel industry continues to face headwinds as U.S. raw steel production fell 0.4% week-over-week, according to new data released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
For the week ending April 19, 2025, domestic raw steel production totaled 1.682 million net tons, with a capacity utilization rate of 74.9%. This marks a slight decline from the previous week ending April 12, when production reached 1.689 million net tons and capacity utilization stood at 75.2%.
In a year-on-year comparison, the decline is more noticeable. Production for the same week last year (ending April 19, 2024) stood at 1.695 million net tons, with a capacity utilization of 76.3%—meaning current production is down 0.8% from last year.
The year-to-date figures also reflect a downward trend. As of April 19, 2025, U.S. mills have produced 25.895 million net tons, with an average capacity utilization rate of 74.6%. This is a 1.3% decrease compared to 26.229 million net tons during the same period in 2024, when capacity utilization averaged 75.2%.
Industry analysts cite weakening demand and global market pressures as contributing factors to the slowdown in production and capacity utilization across the domestic steel sector.
