WASHINGTON, D.C. – April 9, 2025Former President Donald Trump has reopened the door to a potential sale of U.S. Steel to Japan’s Nippon Steel, directing the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to conduct a new and confidential review of the proposed acquisition.

In a statement released by the White House, Trump ordered the review to assess national security concerns tied to the foreign bid and to give all parties involved an opportunity to address any issues that may arise.

"This new review will help determine whether further action is necessary," the statement noted, highlighting the Trump administration's willingness to revisit the deal under a more transparent and presumably less politicized process.

The acquisition has been under scrutiny for months. As previously reported by SteelOrbis, the companies filed a lawsuit in January 2025, accusing the Biden administration of political interference. The suit claimed that former President Joe Biden had pressured CFIUS to block the transaction to gain favor with the United Steelworkers (USW) union, ultimately undermining a fair evaluation process.

The new review comes amid growing debates over foreign ownership in critical industries and may reset the course for a deal that had been sidelined under the previous administration.

CFIUS is expected to begin the investigation immediately, although no timeline has been given for a final decision.
