Trump Considers Halting Tariff Escalation with China; TikTok Deal on Hold

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has signaled a possible shift in tone toward China, suggesting that while current tariffs on Chinese imports remain, the U.S. may avoid escalating them further. Trump emphasized the importance of maintaining balance, warning that pushing tariffs higher could reduce consumer spending power and harm U.S. businesses that rely on Chinese goods.

Currently, a 145% tariff is in place on several Chinese imports, and the administration has used tariff pressure as leverage in broader geopolitical and trade negotiations. However, Trump’s recent comments suggest a more cautious approach could emerge as discussions with China evolve.

Meanwhile, the long-debated decision over TikTok's U.S. operations appears to be delayed. While a divestment deal was expected as part of a national security push, the administration has decided to defer action pending further progress in overall U.S.-China trade talks.

This shift in posture comes amid rising global scrutiny over data security, digital sovereignty, and the complex trade interdependencies between the two largest economies in the world.
