Tokyo Steel, one of Japan's leading electric arc furnace-based steelmakers, has awarded a contract to UK-based Primetals Technologies to upgrade its hot dip galvanizing line at the Okayama Works.
The project involves transforming the existing facility into a continuous annealing and galvanizing line capable of processing both cold rolled and hot dip galvanized coils. The upgraded line is scheduled to begin operations in the first quarter of 2027.
Primetals will lead the engineering and equipment supply for key components, including terminal equipment and skin pass mill modifications. The project is being executed in collaboration with:
-
Chugai Ro, a Japanese thermal technology specialist
-
Hitachi, a global provider of electrification solutions
The revamped facility will retain existing annealing equipment at the Okayama site but introduce several technological enhancements:
-
Induction heating technology in the front section to increase heating capacity
-
Improved cooling capacity in the rear section for better process control
“This upgrade aligns with Tokyo Steel’s goal of expanding its value-added product range while improving operational efficiency,” the company said.
In addition to equipment supply, Primetals and its partners will oversee the installation and commissioning of the upgraded line, ensuring a seamless transition and optimized performance.
