German steelmaker Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe has called on the European Commission to strengthen trade protections against rising low-cost imports of grain-oriented electrical steel from Asia.

The company welcomed the EU’s ongoing safeguard investigation but warned that current measures remain insufficient, as this product category is not fully covered under existing protection frameworks.

Grain-oriented electrical steel is a critical material for power grids and energy infrastructure, making it strategically important for Europe’s energy transition.

Thyssenkrupp highlighted that surging imports have already forced production cuts, including an extension of reduced output at its Isbergues plant in France, describing the situation as a “ruinous flood” of imports.

The company cautioned that without stronger action:
👉 European producers may lose competitiveness
👉 Jobs and technological capabilities could be at risk

It emphasized that swift and targeted trade measures are essential to safeguard domestic industry amid growing demand for electrical steel.
