Thailand Moves to Phase Out Polluting Steel Production Technology

Thailand's Ministry of Industry has announced plans to eliminate the use of outdated induction furnace (IF) technology in steel production. This decision stems from concerns over environmental pollution and inconsistent product quality associated with IF processes.

The ministry will review certification standards for steel produced via IF methods, aiming to revoke certifications where necessary. Investigations have linked IF-produced steel to substandard products and higher emissions of dust and toxic gases.

In contrast, electric arc furnace (EAF) technology offers better impurity removal and operates as a closed system, reducing environmental impact. Thailand's existing EAF capacity of 4.3 million tonnes surpasses the national demand for steel bars, which stands at 2.8 million tonnes, supporting the transition away from IF technology.
