Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce has launched a sunset review of existing antidumping duties on high carbon wire rod imports from China, signaling a reassessment of protective trade measures originally imposed to shield the local steel industry.

The review will evaluate whether removing the current duties would negatively impact the domestic market. These antidumping measures were first implemented in 2014 and later extended for five years in May 2020.

Currently, duties range from 12.26% to 36.79%, applying to high carbon wire rods with a carbon content between 0.76% and 0.92%, and diameters under 14 mm. These products are classified under multiple Customs Tariff Statistics Position Numbers, including 7213.9130.021, 7227.4010.052, and others.

Thailand imported 222,242 metric tons of wire rod from China in 2024, a figure that underscores the volume at stake in this review.

The outcome of the sunset review could reshape trade dynamics between Thailand and China, depending on whether duties are maintained, adjusted, or removed.
