India's passenger car sales in May reflected a mixed performance with a negative bias, as leading automakers reported varied figures for the month, according to data released on Monday.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), the country’s largest carmaker by market share, posted sales of 180,077 units, registering a modest 3.2% year-on-year growth.

In contrast, the second and third largest manufacturers saw declines:

  • Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) reported 58,701 units sold, down 7.6% year-on-year.

  • Tata Motors recorded sales of 41,577 units, a drop of 11% compared to May 2024.

Some automakers reported strong growth:

  • Mahindra & Mahindra posted 84,110 units, marking a 17% increase year-on-year.

  • Toyota Kirloskar Motors Limited reported a 22% rise, selling 30,864 units.

  • Kia India saw sales rise 14.4% to 22,315 units.

  • JSW MG Motor showed the most significant growth, with sales up 40% to 6,304 units.

The overall market performance underscores ongoing shifts in consumer demand, supply chain dynamics, and competitive strategies within India's automotive sector.
