April 22, 2025 — The European Union is prepared to resume negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Gulf countries, according to David McAllister, Chair of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee.

In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, a leading Saudi newspaper, McAllister emphasized that the EU sees renewed strategic value in its partnerships across the Gulf region, particularly with Saudi Arabia, which he described as “the main bilateral and regional partner to the EU in the Gulf region and beyond.”

Our partnership with Saudi Arabia is stronger than ever,” McAllister stated, adding that Riyadh’s regional and global role continues to grow.

The comments come amid global economic shifts and rising trade tensions, with McAllister noting that Europe, like much of the world, is “shocked” by U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff measures. He stressed the EU’s intent to bolster strategic relationships and reach comprehensive agreements in various sectors, extending beyond traditional trade.

On the institutional front, the European Commission approved the launch of negotiations on April 1, and the EU Parliament’s formal approval is now awaited. Once in motion, the agreement is expected to create a binding political and legal framework for enhanced cooperation between the EU and Saudi Arabia, extending into economic, political, and social spheres.

The revival of FTA discussions marks a significant step toward deeper EU-Gulf integration, at a time when global alliances are being reassessed in light of shifting geopolitical dynamics.
