The European Parliament has approved a three-year extension of the suspension of import duties and quotas on iron and steel imports from Ukraine, reinforcing the EU's commitment to supporting Ukraine’s economy amid ongoing challenges.
The exemption, initially introduced in June 2022 in response to the war and economic disruption in Ukraine, was set to expire on June 5, 2025. With this vote, the zero-duty access will now remain in effect until June 2028, pending final approval by the European Council.
Karin Karlsbro, the European Parliament’s rapporteur, emphasized that the Ukrainian steel industry is a cornerstone of its economy, and that the extension represents a mutually beneficial relationship between the EU and Ukraine.
"The extension of trade measures is not only a sign of solidarity," Karlsbro said, "but also a practical step that strengthens both economies."
Meanwhile, the European Commission is actively developing a longer-term trade framework to ensure economic certainty and sustained cooperation between the EU and Ukraine beyond the exemption period.
The regulation is expected to enter into force immediately after the Council's endorsement.
