EU and US to Form Metals Alliance Against China’s Excess Capacity

The European Union and the United States are working on a joint initiative to create a “metals alliance” that would address China’s excess steel and aluminum production capacity. The plan aims to increase transparency, align trade policies, and prevent market distortions caused by state-supported overproduction.

Both blocs share growing concerns that China’s industrial policy undermines global market fairness, driving prices down and discouraging green investments. The alliance would focus on setting shared sustainability standards and applying coordinated tariffs where necessary to safeguard domestic industries.

If finalized, the agreement would represent a strategic pivot in global metal trade, sending a strong signal to Beijing while strengthening transatlantic industrial cooperation. It could also encourage other democratic economies to align in tackling unfair trade practices in the metals sector.
