Egypt has announced the imposition of final safeguard duties on imports of flat steel products, including hot-rolled coil (HRC), cold-rolled coil (CRC), hot-dip galvanized (HDG), and pre-painted galvanized iron (PPGI), effective April 1, 2026, for a period of three years.
According to the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade, the decision follows an investigation confirming that a surge in imports caused serious injury to the domestic steel industry. Data showed that between 2021 and 2024, HRC imports increased by 116%, while CRC, HDG, and PPGI imports rose by 86%.
The final measures replace provisional duties imposed in September 2025 and will be gradually reduced over the three-year implementation period.
Authorities stated that the move is aimed at supporting local production, promoting higher value-added industries, and ensuring fair competition within Egypt’s steel sector.
