Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. has officially launched a $150 million stainless bright anneal line at its Coshocton Works facility in Ohio, marking a significant expansion in its high-performance stainless steel capabilities.
The new vertical annealing line is designed to produce premium-grade stainless steel for critical automotive and home appliance applications. It utilizes a 100% hydrogen atmosphere, replacing traditional acid-based methods, making the process cleaner and more sustainable. A hydrogen recovery unit is also part of the installation, allowing the plant to operate using a 50/50 mix of recycled and new hydrogen, further enhancing efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
Lourenco Goncalves, chairman, president, and CEO of Cleveland-Cliffs, emphasized the importance of the company’s stainless segment, stating it has been the most reliable profit driver since the 2020 acquisition of AK Steel. The newly commissioned line is expected to quickly recoup the investment through improvements in productivity, quality, and cost savings.
This strategic move strengthens Cleveland-Cliffs’ role as a key supplier in the domestic stainless steel market and reinforces its commitment to innovation and sustainability in metals manufacturing.
