In response to the U.S. administration’s decision to double tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50%, Canada is preparing a comprehensive retaliatory plan. Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump are engaging in direct talks to address the escalating trade tensions.

Canada, as the largest supplier of these metals to the U.S., has been significantly affected by the increased tariffs. Industry Minister Melanie Joly confirmed high-level diplomatic efforts, describing the situation as a trade war accompanied by negotiations.

Potential elements of a deal include increasing U.S. content in automobiles, enhancing U.S. access to Canadian critical minerals, and expanding Canada’s role in Arctic affairs. However, if negotiations fail, Canada is prepared to impose retaliatory tariffs to protect its domestic industries.
