Brazil’s Vice President and Minister of Industry and Commerce, Geraldo Alckmin, has emphasized that negotiation remains the top priority in Brazil's response to the US-imposed steel and aluminum tariffs. Despite the tariffs, which raise product prices and complicate trade activities, Alckmin stated that the Brazilian government is committed to dialogue with the US to resolve the issue.

In an interview, Alckmin explained, "Our initial strategy is dialogue, but we are not excluding the possibility of appealing to the World Trade Organization (WTO)," underscoring Brazil's commitment to multilateralism and economic integration, values supported by the WTO.

On March 6, Brazil and the US held a conference call to discuss the matter, which, while constructive, did not lead to any conclusive outcomes. A second conference call is scheduled for March 14, though it has not yet been officially confirmed.

In 2024, Brazil exported over 3.4 million metric tons of slabs to the US, along with just 355,000 metric tons of finished steel products, according to Brazil’s foreign trade authority, SECEX.
