Thailand’s Ministry of Industry has announced that hot-rolled flat steel imports for general structural use must comply with the Thai Industrial Standards Institute’s (TISI) new standard 1479-2566, effective 180 days from June 27, 2025.

The TISI 1479-2566 standard is a national benchmark developed to ensure product quality and structural integrity of hot-rolled flat steel used in infrastructure and general construction. Under the new regulation, importers must apply for a new import license that demonstrates compliance with the updated criteria.

As part of the enforcement:

  • A 5% import duty will be imposed on alloy-added hot-rolled flat steel.

  • Imports of titanium/chromium-added or non-alloyed products will be exempt from the 5% duty.

"This move reflects Thailand’s commitment to infrastructure safety and the standardization of material quality," the Ministry of Industry stated, noting that the regulation is expected to influence regional steel trade dynamics.

The implementation of TISI 1479-2566 aligns Thailand’s steel import protocols with stricter quality control measures, potentially reshaping sourcing decisions for manufacturers and contractors operating in the region.
