Tata Steel Limited is intensifying its shift toward low-carbon steelmaking, with plans to produce 10–15 million metric tons (mt) of steel annually through recycling methods within the next 10–15 years, CEO T.V. Narendran announced on Monday.

The move comes as part of the company’s broader effort to adopt environmentally sustainable practices across both its domestic and global operations.

In the fiscal year 2024–25, Tata Steel produced 30.92 million mt of steel from its facilities in India, the UK, the Netherlands, and Thailand. The company now aims to increase total production capacity to 40 million mt in India by 2030.

“Linearity to circularity is one shift we are making,” Narendran stated. “You will see in the next 10–15 years, 10–15 million tonnes of Tata Steel’s production will be through the recycling route.

In the United Kingdom, Tata Steel is transitioning its 3 million mt/year Port Talbot plant in South Wales from blast furnace to scrap-based electric arc furnace (EAF) technology.

In India, the company has already set up a recycling plant near Delhi and is constructing a 0.75 million mt capacity recycling-based unit in Ludhiana, which is expected to be operational by the end of this financial year.

Across Europe, Tata Steel is planning a full phase-out of blast furnaces by 2035, including an ongoing consultation with the Dutch government to implement similar green steelmaking processes.

“By 2035, we won’t have any blast furnaces operating in Europe,” Narendran added. “We’ll shift from producing 10 million mt with blast furnaces to producing the same volume using greener technologies.

The strategy underscores Tata Steel’s commitment to decarbonization and aligns with global climate goals, positioning it as a leading player in sustainable steel production.
