Japanese steel giant Nippon Steel Corporation has officially completed its strategic partnership with United States Steel (US Steel), in a deal that is expected to generate over 100,000 jobs and bring massive new investments to the U.S. steel sector.
As part of the agreement, Nippon Steel will invest approximately $11 billion into US Steel by 2028, signaling a long-term commitment to expanding and modernizing American steelmaking infrastructure.
In coordination with the U.S. government, both companies have entered into a National Security Agreement (NSA) to address regulatory and strategic concerns. Key provisions of the NSA include:
-
US Steel will retain its headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
-
The majority of US Steel’s board of directors will be U.S. citizens
-
US Steel’s CEO and other key management personnel will also be U.S. citizens
-
US Steel will continue to produce and supply steel from U.S. facilities to meet domestic market demand
-
Nippon Steel will not interfere with US Steel’s ability to initiate trade actions under U.S. law
This partnership marks one of the largest foreign investments in the U.S. steel industry’s history, reinforcing both companies’ commitment to economic growth, national security, and industrial innovation.
The deal also positions US Steel to enhance its competitiveness globally while remaining firmly rooted in the American economy.
