Vietnam’s Steel Imports Drop 9.6% in June, Scrap Imports Stay Steady

Vietnam’s steel imports fell sharply by 9.6% month-on-month in June 2025, totaling 1.17 million metric tons, according to newly released data from the General Department of Customs. In contrast, scrap metal imports remained relatively stable, at 500,299 metric tons for the month.

Steel Imports Fall in H1 2025

In the first half of 2025, Vietnam imported 7.57 million mt of steel, marking a 7.9% decrease year-on-year, as slowing demand and reduced construction activity continue to impact the market.

Scrap Imports Rise 24% in H1

Meanwhile, scrap imports surged 24.2% year-on-year, reaching 3.03 million mt in January–June, reflecting strong raw material demand from local mills.

  • Japan: 1.21 million mt (+37.4%)

  • South Korea: 706,364 mt (+24.3%)

  • Indonesia: 669,728 mt (+102.0%)

  • Taiwan: 423,399 mt (–6.6%)

  • India: 7,775 mt (–95.6%)

The data signals a shift in Vietnam’s trade flows, with imports from China declining, while imports from Japan, South Korea, and Indonesia are rising sharply, particularly in the case of Indonesian steel imports, which more than doubled.
