Denmark's Vestas, one of the world’s leading wind turbine manufacturers, has announced a strategic collaboration with Japan’s Nippon Steel Corporation to boost the wind energy supply chain both in Japan and globally.
The partnership, formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MoU), aims to advance wind energy projects and develop a more resilient and sustainable supply chain across international markets.
Focus on Sustainable Steel and Global Supply
The two companies will explore opportunities in supplying tower steel, particularly from Nippon Steel’s East Nippon Works (Kimitsu) and Kyushu Works (Oita). The steel produced at these facilities will not only support projects in Japan, but also in Europe and other parts of Asia.
In line with the global push for low-carbon infrastructure, both Vestas and Nippon Steel will also examine the use of green steel and TMCP (thermo-mechanical controlled processing) steel, reinforcing their commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices.
Government Support and Shared Vision
This announcement was made alongside the launch of a new study group in collaboration with Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). The group aims to ensure the stable, large-scale deployment of both onshore and offshore wind projects, while strengthening the supply chain domestically and internationally.
Purvin Patel, President of Vestas Asia Pacific, emphasized the importance of this initiative:
“This initiative further strengthens the collaborative relationship between METI and Vestas, which are based on our shared goals of energy security and a sustainable future.”
