U.S. imports of plates in coil rose sharply by 75.8% in May 2025 compared to the previous month, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Department of Commerce. A total of 100,062 metric tons (mt) were imported during the month, up from April's 56,931 mt and 6.6% higher than May 2024’s figure of 93,857 mt.

In terms of value, imports reached $70.7 million in May 2025, up from $40.7 million in April, though still below May 2024’s $87.7 million.

Canada remained the largest source, supplying 42,304 mt of coil plate in May—up from 33,436 mt in April but down from 49,367 mt in May 2024. Other significant contributors included:

  • Turkey: 18,640 mt

  • South Korea: 9,410 mt

  • Netherlands: 7,557 mt

  • Japan: 5,093 mt

The strong monthly increase highlights shifting trade patterns and potential demand fluctuations in the U.S. steel market.
