Tata Steel UK Secures U.S. Tariff Exemption, Reducing Steel Import Duty to 25%

Tata Steel UK has secured a special exemption from U.S. steel tariff regulations, allowing steel processed at its Port Talbot facility in Wales to enter the U.S. market under the United Kingdom’s 25% tariff rate instead of the broader 50% tariff imposed on most imported steel products.

The exemption marks an important development for Tata Steel UK as the company continues its transition toward low-carbon steelmaking. Following the closure of its blast furnaces in 2024, the company has increasingly relied on imported steel substrate for processing operations in the UK.

Under normal circumstances, steel exports must meet strict “melt and pour” origin requirements to qualify for preferential tariff treatment in the United States. However, the new exemption allows Tata Steel UK to maintain UK-origin status for steel products processed at Port Talbot, even when the raw material is sourced from facilities outside the UK.

This means steel finished in Wales can continue benefiting from the lower 25% tariff rate, helping Tata Steel remain competitive in one of its key export markets.

The decision is expected to support the company’s ongoing investment in electric arc furnace technology, a major part of its strategy to reduce carbon emissions and modernize steel production. During this transition period, access to international markets remains critical for maintaining business stability and export volumes.

Industry observers note that the exemption provides greater flexibility for Tata Steel UK's supply chain while strengthening trade ties between the United Kingdom and the United States amid a changing global steel trade environment.
