The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) delivered around 8,000 tonnes of critical-grade steel for the construction of two frontline stealth frigates of the Indian Navy – INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri, both part of Project 17A.

The steel was produced at SAIL’s plants in Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela, reinforcing India’s goal of import substitution and defense self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.

Notably, this marks the first time two major warships, built at two different shipyards – Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) – were commissioned simultaneously.

SAIL has previously supplied steel for key naval projects, including INS Vikrant, INS Nilgiri, and INS Surat, cementing its role in India’s defense industry.
