The government of Odisha, India has officially started the land acquisition process for a proposed $4.6 billion greenfield steel mill, to be built by a joint venture between JSW Steel Limited and South Korea’s POSCO.
Two land parcels in Keonjhar district have been identified for the project, which will have a planned capacity of 5 million metric tons per year. The JV will be required to deposit the necessary funds for the acquisition to proceed.
This marks a significant revival for Odisha’s steel ambitions, especially after POSCO’s 2017 withdrawal from a previous greenfield project near Paradip.
If completed, this project could play a major role in strengthening India’s domestic steel capacity and boosting regional economic development.
