In a significant step toward greener maritime transport, JFE Steel Corporation has announced that Namikata Shipbuilding, a Japanese domestic shipbuilder, has utilized its JGreeX® green steel in the construction of a 499 GT cargo ship. The vessel, capable of transporting approximately 1,600 tons, is scheduled for delivery this month.
The cargo ship will be operated by JFE Logistics Corporation, part of the NYK Group, and will primarily transport steel products for NYK. According to JFE Steel, the vessel is expected to achieve the highest five-star rating under Japan’s Coastal Ship Energy Efficiency Rating System, which assesses emission reductions through energy-saving technologies and operator practices.
The adoption of JGreeX® represents a broader shift in the maritime industry toward decarbonization. Beginning this month, JFE Steel will also supply three additional domestic shipbuilders with its green steel for use in constructing cargo vessels dedicated to transporting steel products.
This initiative is part of JFE Steel’s strategy to drive decarbonization across the entire supply chain, supporting both the steel and shipping industries in reducing their environmental impact.
