Mexico Proposes North American Steel Committee to Curb Asian Imports

Mexico is proposing the re-establishment of a North American Steel Committee, involving trade officials and industry representatives from Mexico and the U.S., with the possible inclusion of Canada later. The initiative aims to reduce dependence on Asian imports and promote the purchase of U.S. steel, possibly supported by increased tariffs on Asian products. As part of its strategy, Mexico has also shut down 1,062 “phantom” steel mills that merely served as import camouflage. The committee is intended to foster regional cooperation and strengthen the steel value chain across North America.
