China’s Steel Inventories Hit 15.9 Mt, Highest in 3 Months

China’s steel stockpiles rose for the fifth straight week between August 8 and 14, 2025, adding 770,700 tonnes to reach 15.9 million tonnes, the highest in three months.

Rebar inventories drove the growth with an increase of 344,200 tonnes, followed by wire rod and plate products. The trend reflects sluggish construction demand, hampered by hot weather and heavy rainfall.

Rising stock levels are putting pressure on domestic steel prices. If seasonal demand in September and October fails to improve significantly, Chinese mills may be forced to consider deeper production cuts to balance the market.
