The United Steelworkers (USW) union is urging the Canadian federal government to take stronger measures to protect jobs and industries in response to steep US tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump since February 2025.
The tariffs—25% in March and later increased to 50% in May on all US steel and aluminum imports—are disrupting Canada-US trade, threatening thousands of jobs, and destabilizing supply chains.
The steel and aluminum sectors employ 20,000+ USW members, with layoffs already reported. Tariffs are also hurting forestry, automotive, and manufacturing industries, raising costs for consumers and delaying investment.
The USW is calling for expanded Employment Insurance coverage, wage subsidies, and a Canadian industrial strategy focused on domestic steel, aluminum, and wood to secure supply chains.
