British Steel has joined a major £22 million initiative aimed at reshaping the UK’s steelmaking sector, with the goal of strengthening the domestic supply chain, boosting national infrastructure, and enhancing national security.

The project, named IGNITE, is led by Swansea University and seeks to revolutionize steel-intensive manufacturing across the country. It has secured £11 million in funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), along with an additional £11.9 million from industry partners, including British Steel, Network Rail, Nissan, and Rolls-Royce.

IGNITE is focused on:

  • Increasing domestic steel production

  • Reducing carbon emissions

  • Supporting low-carbon business models

A key component of the project is developing innovative methods for managing, tracking, and recycling the UK’s abundant supply of high-quality scrap steel. By improving recycling systems and redesigning how steel is used, the initiative aims to maintain high product quality while extending product life.

The project will also foster collaboration between critical players in the industry, bringing together steelmakers, scrap processors, steel users, and policymakers to ensure a more resilient and sustainable steel sector.
