Global steel giant ArcelorMittal has announced plans to acquire the remaining 60% stake in Tuper, a leading Brazilian pipe manufacturer, thereby achieving full ownership. Background of the Acquisition

Tuper, established in 1971, initially focused on manufacturing automotive exhaust systems. Over the decades, it diversified its portfolio to include:

  • Welded steel pipes

  • Structural steel

  • Galvanized steel products

Operating three industrial plants in São Bento do Sul, Tuper boasts an annual production capacity of 826,000 tons and manages 21 distribution centers across Brazil.

In 2016, amid economic challenges in Brazil, ArcelorMittal acquired a 40% stake in Tuper, forming a strategic partnership. The current move to purchase the remaining shares underscores ArcelorMittal's commitment to deepening its integration into the Brazilian market.

Regulatory Approval and Transition

The acquisition is pending approval from Brazil's Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE), with a decision anticipated within 60-90 days. Both companies are collaborating to ensure a seamless transition and maintain job security for approximately 1,800 employees.

Strategic Implications

This acquisition aligns with ArcelorMittal's broader strategy to strengthen its footprint in key markets and diversify its product range. By fully integrating Tuper, ArcelorMittal can leverage synergies in production, distribution, and innovation within the welded steel pipes segment.
