Austrian industrial technology group Andritz has announced the successful commissioning of its new electrolyzer manufacturing plant in Erfurt, Germany, marking a major milestone in its support for low-carbon industrial transformation.

The plant, with a production capacity of approximately 1 gigawatt (GW) of electrolyzers per year, will begin by supplying equipment to German steelmaker Salzgitter AG for its planned 100-megawatt (MW) hydrogen facility—a key part of the company’s efforts to decarbonize steel production.

According to Andritz, the Erfurt facility is designed to scale output based on market demand, supporting future expansion in the green hydrogen sector.

As previously reported by SteelOrbis, the Salzgitter hydrogen plant, also supplied by Andritz, is expected to produce around 9,000 metric tons of green hydrogen annually and will become operational in 2026. The green hydrogen will be used as a clean energy source for steelmaking, helping reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

This initiative underscores Europe’s accelerating momentum toward climate-neutral manufacturing and highlights the growing role of hydrogen in transforming hard-to-abate sectors like steel.
